SP6 Warren Gardner, Battery C, 1960-1964

Bill, I was with “C” Battery from 9-60 till 8-64. Was a SP-6 CW Radar mechanic. CO was Capt. Charles Kindick. XO was Lt. Perry Broaddus. We formed at Fort Bliss around June of 60 and deployed to the CZ in September of that year. If my memory serves me, CO’s during my time were: Kindick, Broaddus, Haynes, Kindick (a second time), Hottel and Middleton.

Most of the senior NCO’s stayed with the unit until late 65. Only 2 First Sgts…..Sandridge and Joe Silva.

CW section was Thornhill, Mikloczak, Taylor and myself. Pulse section was Hale and Hoggard. Missile section was headed by Ishismatsu.

Before we arrived in the CZ Flamenco Island had been vacant for awhile. As you know it had been a triple A site, a costal artillery site and a prison.

During the riots of early 64 (I think) the unit had a ground defense duty in the jungle where the Pan-American highway intersected the CZ.

When I get a few minutes will look for some photos from those days.

Regards,

Warren Gardner
